"Ulviye’s Dream" is a cinemagraph series inspired by women who played significant roles and left a lasting mark during the War of Independence and the early Republic era—women who, despite their contributions, have never been sufficiently remembered.
The project aims to visualize and animate—within a historical setting—the dreams expressed in letters and articles sent from all corners of Anatolia and published in *Kadınlar Dünyası* (Women's World), one of the first women's magazines.
The cinemagraph is an emerging image-making technique—enabled by technological advancements—defined as the animation of still photographs. The cinemagraphs created for this project align with the goal of visualization and animation; by suspending a moment in time while simultaneously introducing movement, the technique oscillates between realism and surrealism, leaving the origins and outcomes of the depicted dreams ambiguous. In doing so, the project will prompt viewers to question the nature of reality and build a bridge between the past and the future, ultimately serving as a source of inspiration and empowerment for Turkish women by reminding them of both their history and their potential.
Ulviye Mevlan was a prominent figure in the Ottoman women's movement and the editor of *Kadınlar Dünyası*. She established numerous schools for girls as well as tailoring workshops to provide employment opportunities for women. Her name signifies greatness, strength, and superiority.
